DAY 1: DEPART U.S.A

You’ll leave this evening on an overnight flight to Rome.

DAY 2: ROME-PALERMO

Arrive in Italy.  We connect in Rome for a brief flight to Palermo, where you are met by your tour escort and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure and opportunity to become acclimated to a new time zone. Overnight in Palermo. (D.)

DAY 3:PALERMO-MONREALE

Our tour includes the Palace of the Normans and the Palatine Chapel glittering with old mosaic, the Cathedral, the Church of St. John of the Hermits, the Quattro Canti (heart of the old City) and the Cappuccini Catacombs. We also visit the colorful Kapo market, for a sensory indulgence. Let’s not forget the Shrine of St. Rosalia, the patron saint of Sicily. Dinner in a restaurant in Karini. Overnight Palermo. (B.D.)

DAY 4: PALERMO- SELINUNTE- AGRIGENTO- PALERMO

We depart for the lost city of Selinunte, where we tour the seafront Acropolis. Continue to Agrigento to visit Valley of the Temples dedicated to Olympian Zeus, and protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Here we marvel at the majesty of these well preserved Temples including the most impressive, the Temple of Concord. In the evening we return to Palermo. Overnight Palermo. (B.D.)

DAY 5: ST. MARTINO DELLE SCALE-MONREALE

We depart this morning for San Martino Delle Scale to visit the Benedictine Monastery where tradition says,  birds took refuge from a very cold winter. We then visit Monreale, with Sicily’s finest cathedral and the mosaic decorated cloister. In the afternoon we return to Palermo. (B.D.)

DAY 6: PALERMO- PIAZZA ARMERINA-ENNA

We depart Palermo for Siracusa for Mass at St. Lucy’s church and to see the “ ear of Dionysus”. Then proceed to Enna, which at 3,000 feet above sea level marks the center of the island. From here on a clear day you may see the entire island of Sicily. We then drive to Piazza Armerina to visit Villa Casale, with its superb collection of mosaics, representing scenes from Roman life 1600 years ago. In the evening we arrive in Taormina for overnight. DAY 7: TAORMINA

{mosimage} Centuries of history, architecture, archaeology and culture engulf you as you breathe the air of this unique island. We start our exploration with this lovely town built on terraces falling to the sea, sits at the bottom of Mt. Etna. The morning tour includes the Greek- Roman Amphitheater and Public Gardens, with a breathtaking view of the active volcano.   Stroll through the quaint city,  before coming to Mt. Etna. Tonight we enjoy a folklore show. Overnight in Taormina. (B.)

DAY 8: MESSINA-ROME

We then visit Messina, for a tour of the town and the Duomo. In the afternoon we take a short flight to Rome. Overnight Rome. (B.D.)

DAY 9: ROME- PAPAL AUDIENCE

This morning we attend the Papal Audience at St. Peter’s. Afternoon at leisure, in the Eternal City, to visit one the many museums on your own or just relax with a gellato in the beautiful square of Piazza Navone. Overnight in Rome. (B.)

DAY 10: CHRISTIAN ROME

Today you are at the center of Western civilization and the heart of modern Italy. The “Eternal City”, where three millennia of Mediterranean civilizations exist and is full of larger than life monuments, which you see during the Ancient and Christian Rome tour. You marvel at the treasures of the Vatican Museum including a tour of the Sistine Chapel. You see the Roman Forum, the Coliseum, Piazza Venezia, Via Veneto, Aurelian Wall, Castle Sant’ Angelo, and more. In the afternoon see thousands of years’ worth of history in Christian Rome tour.  You’ll visit the Catacombs,  Basilicas of Sts. Peter, Mary Major, John Lateran and the Holy Stairs, as well as, the  Holy Cross in Jerusalem and the Major Basilica, St. Paul Outside the Walls. Tonight you have a farewell dinner with wine and music. Overnight Rome (B.D.)

DAY 11: RETURN HOME

This morning transfer to the airport for your flight home. (B.)

We recommend: An extra day- SORRENTO-POMPEII-NAPLES-ROME

We depart for Pompeii where we celebrate Mass at the Rosary Basilica, then tour the volcanic ruins of Pompeii. We’ll go to Nettuno to see the Shrine of St. Maria Goretti.  Next, we go to Naples for a panoramic spin around the famous Bay of Naples and a taste of the equally famous cookies made in this city and finally Rome for a good night’s rest.
