DAY 1: DEPART U.S.A.

You’ll leave this evening on an overnight flight to St. Petersburg.

DAY 2: ST. PETERSBURG

Welcome to Russia. You are greeted by your guide and transferred to the hotel. Afternoon at leisure and the opportunity to become acclimated to a new time zone. ( D.)

DAY 3–4: ST. PETERSBURG

This is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, spread over 101 islands, 66 canals and hundreds of bridges. The city created by Peter the Great is a monument to culture and art. Visit St. Isaac’s Cathedral, St. Nicholas Church, the classic Trinity Cathedral and Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Also see the Admiralty Tower, the Palace Square, Mariinsky Theater, Nevsky Prospect and the imposing Peter and Paul Fortress. The incredible Winter Place and the Hermitage Museum will amaze you with its splendid art collection. In the afternoon take an excursion to the old city of Pushkin, formerly the Czar’s Village to visit the Pushkin Museum and the palace of Catherine the Great. Enjoy a cultural performance. DAY 5: NOVGOROD

Today visit one of the oldest and religiously most important cities in Russia . Novgorod’s architecture and paintings are major achievements of art and religion. See Novgorod Kremlin, St. Sophia Cathedral and visit the Yuriev Monastery. Also see the “Thousands Years of Russia“ monument composed of 129 figures. Return to St. Petersburg, where after dinner you board your first class train to Moscow. (B.D.)

DAY 6-7: MOSCOW

Your guided tour takes you to the Kremlin, and its lavish palaces and splendid cathedrals. See the Bolshoi Theater and Gorki Street, walk through Red Square, to the onion-domed St. Basil Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum, the Church of Kazan and Solovetskiy Monastery. See the Cathedral of Annunciation, Novodevichy Convent and the prestigious resting place of Russian greats, the Novodevichy Cemetery. See the newly rebuilt Cathedral of Christ the Savior. In 1931, the Communist regime dynamited the Cathedral making way for the huge Palace of the Soviets. In 1993, after the fall of Communism, the idea to rebuild the Cathedral was embraced and became a national symbol, of faith and religious pride. DAY 8: GOLDEN RING: –ZAGORSK– ROSTOV– KOSTROMA

You start your tour of the magnificent Russian Golden Ring, in Zagorsk, the holy city of golden and blue domes. Here are fine examples of early Russian architecture, and today the administrative center of the Russian Orthodox Church. Stop at the shores of Lake Nero in Rostov Veliki, often described as Russia’s eternal city. In the afternoon you enjoy a tour of Kostroma, a jewel in the Golden Ring and home to the noble families of Godunov and Romanov Dynasty. You see the Ipatyevsky monastery, and the open air museum next to it. Overnight Kostroma. (B.L. D.)

DAY 9: IVANOV– SUZDAL

You stop in Ivanov, a charming typically Russian old town, before arriving at the museum city of Suzdal. Here we follow the development of Russian architecture from the12th to 19th centuries, by seeing over 10 major monuments of ancient Russian architecture. Lunch at Traktir restaurant. Visit the people who live in the reconstructed village, on the Kamenka River, as their ancestors lived. The town’s historical center is the Kremlin’s Earthen Rampart (11th century), the Museum of Icons and the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin. We also visit the Spaso- Yefimevsky Monastery and the three domed Prokovsky Cathedral. Tonight is a special dinner at the Refractory where you enjoy a pottery cooked meal based on traditional methods and recipes. Overnight Suzdal. (B.L.D.)

DAY 10: SUZDAL–VLADIMIR

A short journey takes you to ancient Vladimir, once the capital of Russia. See the impressive Golden Gate and the splendid Cathedral of the Dormition, as well as the Church of the Intercession. As you stroll the streets of the city, you will have a chance to shop for Russian glass and lacquers. After lunch at a Vladimir restaurant we return to Moscow. Tonight the farewell dinner includes traditional Russian specialties. Overnight Moscow. (B.L.D)

DAY 11: MOSCOW–USA

Transfer to the airport for flight home. (B)
