We have a walking tour of the Old town, whose core consists of  the vast quadrangular palace built by Emperor Diocletian 295–305 for his retirement; defensible and self-sufficient, it was virtually a small town, which later become a town of  shops, offices and apartments.  We see  the colonnaded central court, Temple of Jupiter (now a church), Diocletian’s mausoleum (the cathedral) and the halls of the palace’s substructure. We then visit the  Archaeological Museum with its excellent collection of Roman antiquities, especially carved sarcophagi and home  (and now museum) of Ivan Mestrovic, the great Croatian sculptor (1883–1962). Overnight Split. (B.D)

DAY 3: ZADAR-SIBENIK

We drive northwest through enchanting coastal scenery, to the former capital of Croatia, Zadar,   with its amazing architecture including a Romanesque cathedral and a circular pre-Romanesque church, which is now a Museum of Church Art. We have time to appreciate an altarpiece by Titian, and the Dominican convent nearby with its excellent collection of Croatian and Italian Renaissance paintings.  Rest of the day is at leisure. We cross into  Montenegro and drive around the Bay of Kotor, a fjord which takes the Adriatic circuitously into the interior.
