DAY 2: PARIS

Welcome to France! You are greeted at the airport by our English speaking professional tour and transferred to the hotel in the city. We enjoy a visit to Montmartre, the artist section to see the magnificent Sacred Heart Cathedral towering above the city.  Enjoy a walk through this bohemian section, which was the center of artistic Europe for a time. Famous impressionist artists such as  Manet, Degas, Renoir, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne  drank wine and perfected their art here.  From here you have the best view of Paris.  Later we stroll the many petite avenues of Pere Lachaise Cemetery,  one of the most famous graveyards in the world, where many giants of letters, art and public life are buried. The tour director will have an orientation for you briefing you on local customs, restaurants that are closeby, traveler safety precautions, the central underground transportation systems (RER and the Metro) and currency exchange etc. Overnight Paris. DAY 3: PARIS

This morning we explore the cradle of Paris, the Ile de la Cite, beginning with a visit to the ethereal and magical Sainte Chapelle, one of the masterpieces of Western architecture. Then we walk over to the nearby cathedral of Notre Dame, begun in 1163 on a spot that had already been a religious shrine since Roman times. Over the centuries, the cathedral has been the scene of some of France’s most momentous occasions, including the coronation of Napoleon. We then visit the Hotel de Ville (not a hotel at all), the Picasso Museum and then the Louvre. Within this enormous museum are some of the world’s most treasured art works including the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory and Venus de Milo. One could spend days in here admiring the incredible collections of priceless paintings. Walk the Tuilieries towards the ever popular Champs Elysees. We see the Arc de Triomphe and end the day at the Eiffel Tower. Overnight Paris. (B.D.)

DAY 4: PARIS

Today we climb the Eiffel tower for incredible views of the city then visit Musee D’Orsay where we find masterpieces from the Classical, Romantic, Realist, Barbizon and Post-Impressionist eras. Then on to  Les Invalides, and the Church of St. Louis,  where we see  Napoleon’s massive deep red sarcophagus and the nearby the great military museum. Stroll the Latin Quarter’s winding maze of narrow streets and alleyways. Visit the Luxembourg Gardens to  step into the awesome Pantheon  or the beautiful Jardin du Palais Royal.and this evening  we enjoy a cruise on the Seine River. Overnight Paris. (B.D.)

DAY 5: PARIS – VERSAILLES

Today we are steeped in the history surrounding the French Revolution. We start at the  Place de la Bastille, where on July 14, 1789, an angry Parisian mob stormed the notorious prison and freed the prisoners. Then we explore the square with a peaceful name but a bloody history, Place de la Concorde. This square in the heart of Paris was the sight of the guillotine, which was set up for the execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. We then leave the city for the palace of the Sun King, Versailles where we tour the palace, including the Hall of Mirrors, and the magnificent gardens. On the way back to Paris we stop in the artists colony of Fontenbleu. Overnight Paris. (B.D.)
