DAY 1- Depart USA

Depart USA on an overnight flight to Milan.

DAY 2- LAKE ORTA

Upon arrival in Milan, we are transferred to our hotel in Lake Orta. We have time this afternoon to become acclimated to a new time zone. Welcome dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant and our first opportunity to taste the wine from this region. (D)

DAY 3- PIEMONTE

Today we explore Piedmont region of Italy, with its famous gourmet foods and wines. Piemonte along with Tuscany is the biggest producer of DOCG wines, most notably the reds Barolo and Barbaresco, the white Gavi, and the sweet Brachetto and Asti Spumante. We visit a local vineyard and taste some of these famous wines. Dinner in a restaurant features local cuisine accompanied by a serving of local wines. (B.D.)

DAY 4- LUCCA

Today we depart for Tuscany. Our home for the next several nights is the Casanova Farm, which is a renovated hotel situated on rolling pine covered hills overlooking miles and miles of vineyards. In the afternoon we visit Pisa and Lucca. Dinner at the farm is typically Tuscan, free range chicken, baked bread with olive oil and genuine farmhouse wines. (B.D.)

DAY 5- FLORENCE

We enjoy a full day visit of Florence, including a visit to the Academy to see the famous sculpture of David by Michelangelo and the Basilica of Santa Croce. Afternoon is at leisure for shopping and museum visit. Overnight Lucca. (B.D.)

DAY 6- CORTONA- CHIANTI

This morning we stop at Villa Castello, one of the most beautiful of the Medici villas to see the gardens and the sculptures. We then visit Cortona, made famous by Francis Mayes in her books “Under the Tuscan Sun” and “Bella Tuscany.” Here we enjoy a break and time to explore the city and have lunch. Continue in the afternoon along the Black Rooster road in the Chianti region, enjoying the scenic views before stopping at the Castello di Volpaia for wine tasting and a tour of the cellar. DAY 7-SIENA-WINE ROUTE

We have a walking tour of Siena and visit Enoteca Nazionale, which has the best inventory of vintage Italian wines. The afternoon is dedicated to exploration of the Montalcino wine area, including the Brunello, a superb “Super-Tuscan.” We tour “Villa Banfi” winery, and stop for a sampling of Vino Nobile, the famous sweet Nobel wine made only in Tuscany, before returning to our farmhouse hotel. Dinner tonight is in a restaurant in Lucas. (B.D.)

DAY 8- ORVIETO- ROME

We depart Tuscany for Umbria this morning. Our destination is the hilltop town of Orvieto, famous for the production of Ruffino Classico wine. We tour the city, visit the imposing Cathedral, sample the local wines and have dinner at La Badia (the Abbey), a 14th century monastery which has been converted into an excellent restaurant. DAY 9- ROME

This morning we depart for Rome. Afternoon is at leisure to visit the city on your own, or explore one of the many fabulous Roman indoor or outdoor museums. Overnight Rome. (B.)

DAY 10- ROMAN HILLS-FRASCATI

Today we journey into the Roman Hills where we have an opportunity to taste Frascati wine, and enjoy lunch in a lovely restaurant overlooking a lake. We return to Rome for farewell dinner with wine. (B.L.D.)

DAY 11- RETURN TO USA

Transfer to the airport for flight home. (B)
