This is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, spread over 101 islands, 66 canals and hundreds of bridges. The city created by Peter the Great is a monument to culture and art. Visit St. Isaac’s Cathedral, St. Nicholas Church, the classic Trinity Cathedral and Alexander Nevsky Lavra. See the Admiralty Tower, the Palace Square, Mariinsky Theater, Nevsky Prospect and the imposing Peter and Paul Fortress. The incredible Winter Place and the Hermitage Museum will amaze you with its splendid art collection. In the afternoon take an excursion to the old city of Pushkin, and visit the Pushkin Museum and the palace of Catherine the Great. Today visit one of the oldest and religiously most important cities in Russia. Novgorod’s architecture and paintings are major achievements of art and religion. See Novgorod Kremlin, St. Sophia Cathedral and visit the Yuriev Monastery. Also see the “Thousands Years of Russia” monument composed of 129 figures. Your guided tour takes you to the Kremlin, and its lavish palaces and splendid cathedrals. You will see the Bolshoi Theater and Gorki Street. Continue up to Lenin Hill where the Moscow State University is located and have a breathtaking view of the city. Walk through Red Square; see the onion-domed St. Basil Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum, the Church of Kazan and Solovetskiy Monastery. See the Temple of Christ the Savior, Novodevichy Convent and the prestigious resting place of Russian greats, the Novodevichy Cemetery. Visit the newly rebuilt Cathedral of Christ the Savior. In 1931, the Communist regime dynamited the Cathedral making way for the huge Palace of the Soviets. In 1993, after the fall of Communism, the idea to rebuild the Cathedral was embraced and became a national symbol of faith and religious pride. Visit the famous Russian Metro, which many consider a work of art. You also visit State Tretyakov Gallery, encompassing the history of Russian art. You start your tour of the magnificent Russian Golden Ring. Zagorsk, the holy city is an enchanting medieval town with golden and blue domes. You stop at the shores of Lake Nero, in Rostov Veliki, often described as Russia’s eternal city. In the afternoon you enjoy a tour of Kostroma, a jewel in the Golden Ring and home to the noble families of Godunov and Romanov Dynasty. You stop in Ivanov, a charming typically Russian old town, before arriving at the museum city of Suzdal. Here we follow the development of Russian architecture, from the 12th to 19th century, by seeing over 10 major monuments of ancient Russian architecture. Visit the people who live, as their ancestors did, in the reconstructed village on the Kamenka River. The town’s historical center is the Kremlin’s Earthen Rampart (11th century) , the Museum of Icons and the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin. We also visit the Spaso- Yefimevsky Monastery and the three domed Prokovsky Cathedral. A short journey takes you to ancient Vladimir, once the capital of Russia. See the impressive Golden Gate and the splendid Cathedral of the Dormition, as well as the Church of the Intercession. As you stroll the streets of the city, you will have a chance to shop for Russian glass and lacquers. Afternoon return to Moscow. This morning’s sightseeing tour will include many of the city’s treasures. See the 11th Century St. Sophia’s Cathedral, the fascinating Percherskaya Lavra complex with its golden domed churches, fine parks and mysterious caves. Found in 1051 , the Lavra is one of the holiest places in the former Soviet Union. You will also see the infamous Babi Yar memorial dedicated to 100,00 Kievans who died in World War II. You have the opportunity to take a boat ride on the Dnieper River (in season). In the evening enjoy a colorful folklore performance. (B.D.)
