DAY 1: DEPART THE U.S.A.
Depart this evening on an overnight flight to Rome.
DAY 2: ROME – WELCOME TO ITALY
You are met by your tour guide and transferred to the hotel. Afternoon at leisure to become acclimated to a new time zone. Overnight Rome. (D.)
DAY 3: ROME
This morning you celebrate early Mass followed by the Papal Audience and a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican Museum, Library and Sistine Chapel. Afternoon is at leisure to explore the city, visit one of its many museums or enjoy a gellato in Piazza Novano. Overnight Rome. (B.)
DAY 4: ROME
Today you are at the center of Western civilization and the heart of modern Italy. The “ Eternal City”, where three millennia of Mediterranean civilization exist, is full of larger than life monuments, which you see during the Ancient and Christian tour. You’ll see the Roman Forum, the Colloseum, Piazza Venezia, Via Veneto, Aurelian Wall, Castle Sant’ Angelo, the Pantheon, the Catacombs, the Major Basilicas, St Paul Outside the Walls, and the Holy Stairs. Lodging is in a religious house near the Vatican. Overnight Rome (B.D.)
DAY 5: ROME-ORVIETO- SIENA-ASSISI
Depart Rome after breakfast for a scenic ride to Assisi, the town of beloved St. Francis. En route you stop in the hilltop city of Orvieto to see the magnificent Cathedral, venerate the Miracle of the Eucharist from Bolsena and taste the famous Chianti wine. We then stop in Siena, the city famous for the palio horse races. Mass is celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Catherine, where we see the saints relics and magnificent works of art. Overnight Assisi area in a monastery. (B.D.)
DAY 6: ASSISI
In the morning you visit the holy sites of Assisi, including the beautiful Church of St. Clare, which to this day houses her incorrupt body, the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, the Porziuncola Chapel, site of the thornless rose bush and San Damiano. (B.D.)
DAY 7: UMBRIA: PERUGIA- NORCIA
We explore Arezzo and some of the places sacred to the Franciscan tradition; La Celle, La Verna, La Barbolana and Montecasale. We stop in Perugia, the gentle and mystic center of Umbria with its beautiful ceramic art works and famous Baci chocolates. The afternoon finds us in Norcia, the lovely town surrounded by heart shaped walls that are punctuated by eight gates, and seventeen towers. Here St. Benedict, Patron Saint of Europe and his sister St. Scolastica were born. We see the Basilica of St. Benedetto which stands on the site where the saints were born and the massive structure of Santa Maria Argentea and other churches. We enjoy dinner in this sunny town infused with the aroma of salami and truffles. Overnight in a monastery near Assisi. (B.D.)
DAY 8: FLORENCE
This morning explore the city considered by many to be the cultural heart of Italy. You visit some of the important sites of Florence including the Duomo, the Baptistery designed by Giotto, and Santo Croce, the famous church where Dante, Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci are buried. See the beautiful statue of “David” by Michelangelo. Afternoon at leisure to explore the city, shop for ceramics or leather goods or visit the famous Ufizzi gallery. Overnight at a monastery in the Tuscan hills. (B.D.)
DAY 9: TUSCANY
A full day at leisure. Take an optional tour to Pisa and Lucca or return to Rome for an extra day. Overnight Tuscan hills. (B.D.)
DAY 10: RETURN TO THE U.S.A.
Transfer to the airport for your flight back home. (B)
