The Canonization of Pier Giorgio Frassati

The canonization process is a journey that reflects the life and virtues of individuals who embody Christ-like holiness. Pier Giorgio Frassati, often called the “Man of the Beatitudes,” is a beacon of inspiration for Catholics worldwide. His life of unwavering faith, charitable works, and love for the poor has sparked devotion among many. This blog explores Frassati’s path to sainthood, his extraordinary life, and why his canonization and sainthood which is set to happen on August 3, 2025, holds immense significance.

Who Was Pier Giorgio Frassati?

Pier Giorgio Frassati was born on April 6, 1901, in Turin, Italy, into a wealthy and influential family. Despite his privileged upbringing, Frassati was deeply aware of the struggles of the poor and marginalized. His parents, Alfredo and Adelaide, instilled in him a strong sense of responsibility and discipline, but his profound faith came from his own personal devotion. As a young man, Frassati excelled in his studies and had a passion for adventure, particularly hiking and mountain climbing. Yet, what truly set him apart was his spiritual commitment and his love for the poor. He became an active member of several Catholic organizations, including the St. Vincent de Paul Society, where he devoted much of his time to serving the needy.

Living the Beatitudes: A Life of Holiness

Frassati’s life was a living testament to the Beatitudes. He consistently demonstrated: Mercy for the Poor: Frassati was known for his acts of charity, often giving away his own belongings to help those in need. His journals reflect a young man who saw Christ in the faces of the poor and sick. Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness: He was an outspoken advocate for social justice and often stood in solidarity with the underprivileged, even during politically turbulent times in Italy. Purity of Heart: Frassati maintained a deep personal relationship with God, evident in his regular attendance at daily Mass and his devotion to the Rosary. His faith was not confined to rituals; it was lived out in every interaction, making him a relatable and inspiring figure for both young people and adults.

The Path to Sainthood: Beatification and Beyond

Frassati’s path to canonization began after his untimely death at the age of 24 on July 4, 1925, due to polio. His illness, likely contracted during his charitable visits to the poor, was a final act of self-giving. Thousands of people, many of them from the impoverished communities he had served, attended his funeral—a testament to the profound impact he had during his short life. In 1981, Pope John Paul II declared him “Venerable,” recognizing his heroic virtues. On May 20, 1990, Frassati was beatified by John Paul II, who called him the “Man of the Eight Beatitudes.” This marked the first official step toward canonization.

In 2011, Kevin Becker was preparing to begin his final year at East Stroudsburg University. Just a week before classes started, his life took a devastating turn. Kevin fell from the roof of his dormitory under mysterious circumstances, with no memory of how it happened. His girlfriend and friends discovered him on the ground, severely injured with a fractured skull and multiple other injuries. He was rushed to the ICU in a coma, with doctors giving him just a 30% chance of survival.

During this critical time, a family member introduced Kevin’s loved ones to Pier Giorgio Frassati, a Catholic figure known for his intercessions. The family began praying a novena to him. On the third day of the novena, Kevin unexpectedly opened his eyes. Within ten days, he had made a remarkable recovery.

Kevin later recounted encountering an angel named George who comforted him during his ordeal. When his mother, Jeanmarie, showed him a picture of Pier Giorgio Frassati, Kevin recognized him immediately, saying that was the presence who had been with him. Unbeknownst to him, an image of Frassati had been placed near his hospital bed throughout his recovery.

Frassati’s influence extends far beyond his lifetime. He has become a patron for:
