Welcome to Italy. Upon arrival in Milan, we are greeted by our English-speaking guide, who will meet us at the airport to assist with luggage and boarding our bus. We depart for Turin. Walk to La Consolata, the location where Frassati helped the poor. We celebrate Mass at San Domenico, where he entered the Dominican Third Order. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Turin.
After breakfast, we have morning Mass at the tomb of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati (TBC). Following time to see the replica of the Shroud of Turin (the Vatican has not confirmed the actual Shroud exhibit dates as of this brochure printing), we see the Basilica of Maria Ausiliatrice (Our Lady Help of Christians), where the tombs of Saint John Bosco, Saint Mary Mazzarello, and Saint Dominic Savio are located. After lunch, visit the home of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati and La Crocetta, his parish church. We arrive in Oropa for dinner and overnight.
Our day is dedicated to the Sanctuary of Oropa. The Sanctuary, “the Shrine between Earth and Sky,” was founded in the 4th century by St. Eusebio and is a pilgrimage site to the statue of the Black Madonna. We celebrate Mass, visit the sanctuary and hike on Mount Mucrone to Poggio Frassati. Spend a quiet retreat evening in Oropa with time for rest, adoration, confession, and fraternity. Dinner and overnight in Oropa.
This morning, we depart for Pollone, a small town with majestic views of the Piedmont region of Italy. Pier Giorgio spent his summers there, and the Frassati family still owns the house he stayed in. We visit the Villa Ametis. Built by Pier Giorgio’s maternal grandfather, Francesco Ametis, in 1875, the Villa was the site of many holidays and summer vacations. See Pier Giorgio’s room, which he occupied during his lifetime, the room that now houses the bed where he died, and other furniture from his room at the family home in Turin. Then walk to the “Cangio Church” (Ss. Fabian and Sebastian), where Pier Giorgio was baptized and where we celebrate Mass. Following lunch, we depart for Assisi. Dinner and overnight in Assisi.
Our morning visit to Assisi includes visits to the Basilica of St. Clare, the Basilica of St. Francis and the Sanctuary of the Spoliation to see the tomb of Blessed Carlo Acutis in the Church of St. Mary Major. Mass will be celebrated. In the afternoon, we drive to Rome, arriving just before dinner. Overnight in Rome.
We celebrate Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica (TBC) and walk through the first Holy Door of our pilgrimage. In the afternoon, we hike to Tor Vergata (3 hrs 30 min), a site outside of Rome where the Canonization will take place. We will have a packed dinner with us as we will spend the night under the stars during the Vigil with Pope Francis at Tor Vergata. (B. Packed dinner)
Today we are part of history as Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati is declared a Saint by Pope Francis. Following the Canonization Mass, our bus picks us up and returns to Rome. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore Rome on our own, perhaps visit the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. Dinner is at leisure. Overnight in Rome.
This morning, we celebrate Mass at Santa Sabina (TBC). We visit St. Paul Outside the Walls to walk through the second Holy Door of our pilgrimage. Nearby, we see Tre Fontane, where St. Paul was beheaded. We then explore St. Mary Major Basilica and walk through the third Holy Door of our pilgrimage. Continue to St. John the Lateran, the cathedral church of Rome, containing sacred relics of Peter and Paul and the magnificent sculptures of the twelve apostles. Here, we walk through the fourth and final Holy Door of our pilgrimage. We also visit the Holy Stairs from Jerusalem and see relics of Christ’s Passion in the Basilica of the Holy Cross. Overnight in Rome.
Today, explore Rome’s famous sites and churches on foot with your priest leaders. Mass will be celebrated. Dinner is at leisure. Overnight in Rome.
