Some of Select’s amazing team in Italy

As many of you have heard by now, it is a Jubilee Year in Rome in 2025. The holy doors of the four major basilicas will be opened and many special events are planned throughout the year. There are also two canonizations happening: Blessed Carlo Acutis in April and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati in July.

To ensure that our pilgrims have the best experiences, some of our team from Select headed to Rome over the Thanksgiving holiday to meet with our suppliers and conduct site inspections. We visited hotels, churches, and restaurants that our pilgrims frequent to make sure they fit our itineraries and expectations. It was a whirlwind trip, but we left feeling incredibly excited about the year to come. We learned some things that are important to keep in mind when traveling to Rome in 2025. It is our top priority to make sure that our pilgrims are prepared for travel no matter where it is, but in particular, for Italy next year. Here are some things we learned.

  • Flexibility: A Jubilee year attracts many people to Rome. It is an exciting time in the Catholic Church and people want to be part of it. Add two canonizations to an already busy time, and there will be a much greater need for flexibility. We want you to be prepared for schedules to change, but also understand if they do, it’s because we are providing better options at the moment. This could look like swapping two days or visiting a site at a different time of day.  Regardless of the reasons, we are here to make sure you receive the best care and experiences possible.

  • Longer Wait Times: If you have ever been to a theme park, most likely you have experienced the long queues for some of the attractions. Imagine that same situation in Rome. Traveling as a group allows a “fast pass” through the general lines, but it won’t remove wait times entirely. With the volume of people traveling to Rome, there is no way to avoid waiting. Here are some things to consider keeping with you on the days you are headed to the busy areas:
      • Sunscreen / sun protection – If you are outside on a sunny day, this is a good idea.
      • Rain gear – Consider a poncho or jacket that is lightweight and rolls up small to fit in a small bag. I found a great option on Amazon that comes with its own bag. It fits easily in luggage and has great coverage.
      • Water – Don’t assume that water will be readily available. Consider traveling with a reusable water bottle and refill it before leaving the hotel each day. Hydration is so important!
      • Snacks – keep something small on hand, whether it’s a piece of fruit or even some hard candies. A little sugar boost helps when you are feeling tired.
      • Patience – This is not meant to be facetious. Long lines can be straining, causing even the calmest person to become irritable or impatient. Download a prayer app, bring a small prayer book or carry a rosary with you. This would be a great time to gain some graces in the Eternal City!

  • You Will Walk … A LOT: Rome is a walking city. In fact, some of the team participated in a walking tour while in Rome recently in order to experience the same walk our pilgrims will take while in Rome. Keep in mind that many areas have cobblestone and uneven walkways. There are plenty of stairs and hills too. Trade cute for comfort by wearing a good pair of sneakers or walking shoes. You will probably average around 12,000 to 15,000 steps a day. Do not take this lightly. There will be longer than normal times spent standing (as I spoke about above), so be prepared to be on your feet.

While some of this may feel a little intimidating, it is meant to prepare our pilgrims. We want you to have incredible, memorable experiences and believe that preparation is key. We believe walking through the holy doors, witnessing a canonization, visiting beautiful cathedrals and holy sites, eating delicious pasta and gelato, and receiving an abundance of graces and blessings is worth all the above and some.

You got this! Next stop, Italy 2025!

You will find some of the best gelato and pasta in Rome!

We visited many beautiful hotels in Italy and have hand-picked the best for our pilgrims!
