Going on a Catholic pilgrimage to Italy during the Jubilee Year with a new pope at the helm was an unforgettable spiritual journey. There were so many special moments throughout our time in Italy, but finishing up in Rome was truly a gift. Walking down the pilgrimage road with over 150 prayerful pilgrims and passing through the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica, surrounded by centuries of history and devotion, was deeply moving — a moment of grace and renewal that felt especially powerful in this sacred year. Our pilgrims’ hearts were set on prayer and transformation, united by the rare opportunity to live their faith in such a profound and communal way. It left me speechless as I witnessed the devotion and joy of this incredible group of people, carrying with them personal stories, petitions, desires, and prayers of thanksgiving. I was humbled to share this moment with them.

One highlight of our pilgrimage was the Wednesday Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square. Even under the intense sun of Rome during an unforeseen heat wave, the energy of the crowd was magnificent. Small flags from around the world fluttered in the heat, pilgrims shared introductions and stories, waiting for hours to catch a glimpse of the Holy Father, and then, suddenly, voices rose in excitement as Pope Leo entered the square in the Popemobile. He seems to me to be a kind-hearted man, his gentle smile instantly putting people at ease. Cries of “Papa Leo!” ( some coming from me!) rang out joyfully as pilgrims waved, snapped pictures, and reached out to him. He blessed babies, paused often to smile warmly, and made sure to acknowledge as many people as he could—not with formality, but with genuine affection. Our Papa!

There was something truly special about experiencing the audience in this Jubilee Year under the leadership of Pope Leo. His presence is bringing a fresh spirit of compassion and humility to the Church. Many of us felt as though we weren’t just witnessing history, but becoming part of it. The way he connected with the people — with patience, kindness, and sincere joy — made the pilgrimage feel personal. In a time when the world often feels divided, standing together in that square, united by faith and led by such a gentle shepherd, was a powerful reminder of the grace and unity at the heart of the Church.

Afterward, many of our pilgrims spoke with heartfelt emotion about the exceptional experience. Conversations often turned to how fortunate we all felt to be there, in this holy place, during a Jubilee Year, with a new pope who radiated warmth and joy. Pilgrims expressed that experiencing the Papal Audience was life-changing, saying it deepened their faith and brought a renewed sense of hope. For me personally, it was incredibly touching not only to share the Papal Audience with so many faithful pilgrims, but to feel, in my own heart, that this was a life-giving experience — one that renewed my spirit, strengthened my faith, and will remain with me always.

Rome is calling, my friends. Go home and visit your Papa. He is waiting to greet you, and we have plenty of opportunities available!
